PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX
Are you ready?
What is the plastic packaging tax?
The Plastic Packaging Tax came into effect on 1st April 2022. It is a tax on plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported into, the UK, where the plastic used in its manufacture contains less than 30% recycled plastic. The rate of tax will be £200 per metric tonne on any plastic packaging that does not contain at least 30% of recycled plastic.
The aim of this is taxation is to encourage the use of recycled plastic instead of new plastic in packaging. The hope is that this will generate a drive towards increased levels of recycling and lead to advances in the way the UK manages waste plastic.
Who does it affect?
Any business that manufactures or imports 10 or more tonnes of plastic packaging over a 12-month period must register. Further information for businesses visit gov.uk .
What steps can be taken to avoid the tax?
As we currently understand it, the best option is to use plastic packaging that contains at least 30% recycled material in its manufacture.
Importers of packaging materials are directly responsible for registering with HMRC, reporting, and paying the tax. Even if the plastic strapping contains 30% recycled material and there is no tax to pay, they must still register, report to HMRC and keep documentary evidence.
